Austin Lucas Bashes Transphobes Back In New “Black Me Out” Video

Austin Lucas fights back against a crew of would-be bad guys in their new music video for “Black Me Out,” a cover of the invigorating song by Against Me! We spoke with Lucas when they first released Reinventing Against Me!, how important it has been to them to present as their full self, and the challenges that have come along with it.

(Mild cw: attempted transphobic attack.)

In the video, directed by Indecline, Lucas and a friend walk along an abandoned railroad, attracting the attention of the wrong types of guys. Unfortunately for them, Lucas and their friend are accomplished martial arts fighters and teach them a thing or two about rolling up on trans people. Interspersed in the fight are scenes of Lucas and friends partying by the river and a mysterious graffiti artist creating a beautiful mural.

Lucas’ cover brings out all the twang lurking in the background of Against Me!’s punk revenge fantasy, creating an exuberant anthem to sing in the face of would-be oppressors. However, it’s Lucas’ final snarl that gives the song its true, chilling impact.
