Country Risqué Hopes You Stay Away From Their “Depression Drawer”

Country Risqué aren’t afraid to talk about the things you’d rather avoid. On their new single “Depression Drawer,” the band glorifies one of our collectively sadder habits, sarcastic and goofy and biting all at the same time in a way that reminded me of Lavender Country.

“Depression Drawer” is one of two adjacent songs on Doe-Eyed Loverboys & Saints to be written and sung by Daniel Bromfield, and it is the only one of the two written specifically for this project (“Autumn of Your Charm” is a holdover from a previous country band that never took off). Inspired by the lackadaisical slacker folk of Michael Hurley and Rocks in Your Head label boss Sonny Smith, “Depression Drawer” is one of the group’s biggest crowd-pleasers and a natural choice for the album’s second single.

Daniel Bromfield explains, “The depression drawer is the drawer in your bedroom where clutter accumulates because you don’t want to clean it out—or maybe you don’t even find it worth cleaning out on an existential level. The psychic burden of the drawer’s existence objectively outweighs the minor hassle of cleaning it, but choosing to clean it could be the beginning of a long process of self-improvement you’d rather hold off on until tomorrow. If you don’t have a depression drawer, count yourself lucky.”

Their debut album Doe-Eyed Loverboys & Saints is to be released on March 15, 2024 via Rocks in Your Head Records.
