Brian Falduto Spends "Christmas Solo" In Original New Song
Brian Falduto celebrates spending the holidays alone on his new Christmas song "Christmas Solo"
Brian Falduto is a purveyor of jaunty country pop and touching ballads. On his latest single "Christmas Solo," Falduto finds joy in being himself – and being alone. He tells us about where all these songs come from and his own favorite Christmas music.
There's no shortage of Christmas music out there. What inspired you to write a song of your own?
Agreed! There's no shortage of Christmas music out there, but it's often romantically themed. I noticed that all the Christmas songs I could think of were about needing someone, wanting someone, missing someone; so, in the event you don't have anyone come Christmastime, all that messaging can be a bit overwhelming! This song offers a fresh take on those holiday blues and offers some reasons to celebrate even if you find you are celebrating by yourself. I've had my fair share of single Christmases and even holidays where I may not have been physically alone, I often felt alone.
As someone who grew up queer and closeted, and even after coming out, I found that the holidays were a section of the year where I was forced to spend more time than I usually would in environments that didn't feel entirely supportive or where I felt I couldn't be my full, authentic self. In general, Christmas is a challenging time for a lot of people & this song is meant to offer some levity to the season.
You have a knack for writing songs with a fantastic pop hook and witty lyrics. What's your process like?
I appreciate that, thank you. My process changes often. Sometimes I'll have a lyric or a melody and I'll build on that over time or sometimes, as was the case for "Christmas Solo," I'll just have a concept or an idea for a song that I'll bring to a writing session and it will serve as inspiration for crafting a song. Very rarely I'll have entire song flow out of me in 20 minutes but it does happen. I tend to start with what I want to say & then the fun is discovering what melodies & chords & production arrangement best supports that.
Do you have a favorite Christmas song of your own?
I do and it's a bit of an obscure pick: "Christmas Time Again" by Extreme. It's just a random track on one of those "A Very Special Christmas" compilations but my mom used to blast it in the car around the holiday season so there's a lot of nostalgia associated with it. Plus, it's just a great tune.
You're launching the single with a party in New York City. What can fans expect at the show?
Yeah! I'm so excited. My neighbor owns this awesome restaurant called "Carriage House" in the West Village and he's allowing us to celebrate the start of the holiday season there on December 1st. We will have a little listening party for the song, which will have come out two days prior. There will also be party favors and themed drinks. I'm not usually one to host holiday parties but I felt like I had a reason to this year.
