Bryan Ruby is a master of a great hook. Not that he needs to do much more to grab you then vocalize into a mic – Ruby's voice is buttery smooth and full of heart. Whether he's hyping us up with Southern rock or digging deep into his register for a ballad, Ruby's music is resplendent with sincerity and, on Growing Season, it's only maturing.
The EP has four impactful songs. "Digging ('Til the Corn Comes Up)" and "Going to Work" celebrate people who work hard with spritely guitars and hair metal intensity. But Ruby does best with gentle character sketches, and "Ball Cap" is the standout on this jewel box of an EP. Ruby sketches ordinary people's desires and dreams with a compassionate touch, hinting at the fine storyteller he's growing into.
