PREMIERE: The Belle Curves Revel In “Private Oceans”

Long Island’s The Belle Curves, lead by Delaney Hafener, specialize in a dreamy, cosmic Americana that is as much new wave and punk as it is country music. Hafener gives her songs an airy touch, creating a gauzy sound that could fit comfortably in any postwar decade. On the band’s new song “Private Oceans,” Hafener gives a commanding performance.

“Private Oceans” kicks off with the Belle Curves’ trademark sweet-sour mix: Hafener purrs that she’s “out collecting bruises tonight” as the band kicks into a jangly melody. As Hafener announces her readiness to muddy her “private oceans” with the streams of exciting new people around her, the band keeps its cool. There’s something melancholy to the declaration, a last look at a former life as the narrator launches herself into the one she’s been waiting for.

The Belle Curves will be performing at the Sag Harbor American Music Festival on Saturday
September 30th at 1pm at Ryland’s Green, where Main Street meets Madison Street. “I can’t wait to bring my full band to this festival, it’s been on my bucket list for years and I’m stoked to be on a lineup with
artists like the visionary Amythyst Kiah and local legend Nancy Atlas,” Hafener said.
