Rabbi Sandra -- A Song For a New Year
In A Song For a New Year, Rabbi Sandra Lawson invites us to consider how we can greet the coming challenges with openness and love.
Rabbi Sandra Lawson has been a vital voice in the Reconstructionist Jewish movement for some time now. Her life's work has been to make space for LGBTQ+ and POC within Judaism – a task about as easy as convincing the Jews who left Egypt to stick to the Ten Commandments. But Lawson has always done so with a gentle touch, calling others in in the most genuine sense of the word.
But everyone needs a hobby, and Lawson's is country and Americana music, adding to the canon of artists she grew up with. While Lawson has been releasing twang-ified prayers for some time now, A Song For a New Year is her debut album, featuring her backing band the Protestant White Boys (Mason Keck – producer and guitars; Seth Aldridge - percussion; Will Lowe - bass guitar.) A Song For a New Year incorporates elements of Jewish prayer, but the album has wisdom for all people.
The album contains the core principals Lawson has shared with us in her speaking engagements, essays, newsletters, sermons, and, of course, her songs: we must see others where they actually are, not where we wish them to be, if understanding can ever be reached. The Protestant White Boys add a special kick to the music, driving home the joy we feel when we arrive at these truths – no matter which spiritual path you take to get there.
