- Sug Daniels is readying her first album, and "Black and Gifted" gives us an idea of what she's all about. This rollicking rocker is gentle but determined: an exhortation for us to carry on the work that our ancestors began, even if, like them, we may not see its fruits.
- S.G. Goodman delivers an alternative point of view, with "Satellite" an ominous warning for those who embrace the trappings of our society with no regard for others.
- With "Tiny Boy," Bandits on the Run embrace a new project to translate Shakespeare into Americana music. While the song is centered on Twelfth Night, it also speaks to the ways we compromise ourselves to please others.
- Nobody makes mental illness sound more fun than Laura Jane Grace. "Active Trauma" is a breezy pop punker that highlights the dissonance of wanting to connect with the world while feeling completely disassociated.
- Ringdown is an exciting chamber pop duo, one half of whom is (hear me out) Caroline Shaw, an exceptional contemporary classical composer. With her partner Danni Lee, Ringdown embraces a joyfully queer aesthetic and I was shocked and delighted to hear Ringdown cover Patsy Cline. It's not out of place on the album, and I encourage you to check out the rest of it, even if it's not your usual thing.
