Angie K — “Red Dirt on Mars

How far would you go for love? To the moon and back? But if you need to leave someone behind, maybe you need to go even farther — like Mars? Angie K sparkles on the breakup ballad “Red Dirt on Mars.” This has everything you need from a country torch song: yearning, passion, wordplay, and Angie K belting like nobody’s business. This has got me looking forward to her next release, and I’m sure you will, too.

Denitia — “Back To You”

Denitia gets classic on “Back To You.” The music video evokes the warm vintage tones of Denitia’s own voice and the determined, gentle beat of the song. Denitia can’t seem to shake a certain someone from her heart, much like the stalled out car in the video. There’s a little hint of hope that things could change…but we all know what happens when you try to rekindle the flame.

Amy Annelle — “Pull Tabs and Broken Glass (ft. Jolie Holland)”

Austin lifer Amy Annelle is readying her next album, The Toll, which will be out on August 2nd. She’s giving us a hint at what’s to come here with “Pull Tabs and Broken Glass” — a timeless feel and a story of brokedown people told with a wink and a regretful laugh. The song features the talents of Jolie Holland, who released her own monumental album recently. This is a haunting reflection on the ghosts of the past, sung with exuberance — not to dispel the spirits, but to give them life.

Jessye DeSilva & Lafemmebear — “Firecracker (Pride Remix)”

It’s Pride! Did you know??? So you know we gotta have some disco going. Lafemmebear has transformed “Firecracker,” from Jessye DeSilva’s Renovations, to a catchy dance-along. Country and disco have been friends for longer than country artists might want to admit, and Lafemmebear does a brilliant job of breaking down the song’s defiant elements and creating a catchy house remix that honors queer voices across music and history.

Flamy Grant — “S.P.R.K.L. (ft. Ricky Braddy)”

Flamy Grant’s queer country funk stays strong on “S.P.R.K.L.” The song is a self-love anthem delivered with that curious mix of sincerity and caustic drag queen humor that Flamy Grant is so good at. Ricky Braddy’s solo brings us all to church in the best way. As the pair double off each other, we’re reminded that there’s more to a great song than just a good time.
