A Belated Queer Christmas Song With Brye

Just a little last dollop of queer holiday cheer from Brye and the Sleigh the Holidays compilation album!

A Belated Queer Christmas Song With Brye

I got a little too unplugged leading up to, during, and after the holidays and, to be honest, this interview fell off my plate! But I wanted to feature this Sleigh the Holidays compilation for a number of reasons:

1) The compilation, assembled by Head Bitch Music, is a celebration of different genres, traditional and original holiday music, and all of the artists featured on the album are women, non-binary, and queer musicians.

2) We're heading into hard times indeed and Sleigh the Holidays can offer some comfort all year round.

3) A portion of the streaming royalties will go to The Ally Coalition, which provides critical support for organizations dedicated to bettering the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth, and raises awareness about the systemic inequalities facing the LGBTQIA+ youth population. Especially with the wildfires, the LGBTQIA+ community will need The Ally Coalition's services more than ever.

4) It's cute! Be like my Jewish grandma and enjoy Christmas all year round.

Without further ado, LA singer-songwriter Brye shares her love for Christmas and the wholesome inspiration behind her contribution, "date you for Christmas."

I know recording Christmas music is meat and potatoes for musicians, but how do you really feel about it?

I am such a sucker for Christmas music, Christmas is my favorite holiday by far. I was chomping at the bit to release my own Christmas music.

How did you find out about this compilation? What made you want to participate in it?

Head Bitch Records put it together and I adore everyone on that team. I'd been looking for the perfect excuse to put out a Christmas song for years, and they handed it to me on a silver platter.

Why do you feel it's important to make an album of queer-specific Christmas music?

Christmas is obviously rooted in Christianity, which is inherently really heteronormative. You don't see or hear about queer people in Christmas media. How sweet that we get to highlight it!

Tell us more about "date you for Christmas." What inspired the song?

I was only like two days into talking to a hinge match and I could not stop thinking about them. I was all gushy and the festivities were really amplifying it.

How do you feel your experience as a queer person impact your artistry?

I think it allows me to experience and talk about love/attraction in a different way. Like I have a different perspective because the love I want used to be so forbidden.
