WATCH THIS: Julie Nolen tells celebrates Pride with an awkward run-in with her ex -- and some very pointed instructions on where to go in "I Don't Miss You"
Julie Nolen proves why she's the majordomo of Austin queer country on "I Don't Miss You." The deliciously acidic kiss-off song showcases Nolen's born-for-honky-tonk voice and wickedly sharp pen. The music video, which you can watch below, brings home a uniquely queer experience.
Inspired by a run-in with an ex at a bar, the video leans all the way into the chaos, tension, and undeniable humor of queer heartbreak in the wild. It’s a little bit confrontational, a little bit cathartic, and very self-aware. Or, as Nolen puts it: “You know you’re super gay when you write a song about running into your ex at a bar…and then release the video during Pride Month.”
“I Don’t Miss You” has always balanced heartbreak with bite, but the visual brings that story to life with a wink. It lives in that all-too-familiar moment of I know that you know that I know that you saw me at the bar – where closure is nonexistent, but eye contact says everything.
“Sometimes you don’t get to say what you want to someone’s face,” Nolen says. “So you write a song, make a video, and put it out during Pride. That’ll do it.”
Produced by acclaimed Texas rocker Jonathan Tyler (Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, Nikki Lane, Desure), the track pairs Nolen’s signature grit and melodic strength with a polished yet punchy sound that lingers long after last call.
Known for her fiery live shows and razor-sharp lyricism, Nolen continues to carve out space for queer voices in country and Americana. As the founder of OUTlaw Pride Festival—the first queer country music festival in Texas—she remained a driving force for LGBTQIA+ visibility in the genre.
