You can't take it with you – but you can bring the music in your head. On Jukebox in Exile, Canadian country singer C.C. Trubiak learned this after evacuating his home in Manitoba during the 2025 wildfire season, as he explained in our interview. On his morning walks, Trubiak immersed himself in golden age country music and began writing songs in that vein. The result is a collection of earthy, all-too-human stories told with warmth and grace.
"Old Country Songs" introduces us to a world steeped in rural imagery, where the common sense is as grounded as the rhyme scheme, and where good intentions may not yield the desired results, but at least you tried your best. Trubiak nails the balance between dry humor, earthy humility, and a voice that is a polished diamond in the rough.
Unsurprisingly, Exile spends a lot of time sitting in grief. Not the unproductive kind, but turning it over like a stone in your hand. "No Longer By Your Side (But Forever In My Heart)" and "Going Home" examine loss with acceptance and a sense of determination. Change is simply a part of life, and even when it's difficult, it is also an opportunity to display resiliency.
But there's plenty of fun to be had here, too – "Out of Control Raging Fire" is a barn burner, perhaps imaging a more productive metaphor for the phrase than the flames consuming one's hometown. The song gives Trubiak a chance to display some mischievous rizz as two small-town lovers who would be better off apart do what they know they shouldn't.
Trubiak doesn't dwell in nostalgia here – instead, he takes the kernel of what makes classic country so good and puts his own spin on it. Timeless but never too reverent, Jukebox in Exile invites us to locate our hopes and travails on a continuum we all share across time and space.
