Katy Guillen & The Drive -- Make That Sound
Katy Guillen & The Drive deliver raw compelling rock'n'roll on their album Make That Sound and Tacilim Orefice lived to tell the tale about it in his review.
If you're searching for a band that delivers the raw, loud energy of a live bar performance but with the depth to soundtrack a more intimate moment, you've struck gold! Katy Guillen & The Drive craft a potent sonic cocktail of retro-psychedelic rock, fueled by searing 60s/70s guitar tones and powerhouse lead vocals. Fans of Queens of the Stone Age's swagger and The Black Keys' raw blues-rock will feel right at home. The whole album has a wonderfully raw and immediate feel, grounded by down-to-earth songwriting that isn't afraid to launch into experimental transitions. That quality is almost certainly due to the chemistry between Guillen and drummer Stephanie Williams, who are partners. It's raw, it's tight, and it's utterly compelling.
The album Make That Sound features 10 amazing tracks, starting with a vivid and strong beginning on “Outcome.” You can easily imagine this song—or any other from the whole album—featured in a movie soundtrack, a road trip playlist, or as the perfect boost for a party.
In contrast to the opener, “Feel Good” has the perfect calm vibe to evoke nostalgic memories, offering a nice moment for self-reflection or a delightful, soothing experience. It shows how skilled the band is at executing different styles masterfully.
“Goodbye Charlie” hits you hard, as everyone has a similar story to remember, to mourn, and to wish they could live all over again in a better version with a different end. A tale of doing what your heart wanted, not what was the logic and better to do.
“What If” gave me chills. While you might regret your decisions in the previous song due to uncertainty, this one makes you feel resolute. You know what you want. This track empowers the listener with truly solid rock.
The next song, “Staying Awake,” warms your heart with its good vibes and takes you on a lovely journey you don't want to end. You get a nice return to that road with the following track, “Love You For All Time”, which is a lovely love letter with a great arrange of instruments rhythm, and definitely the lyrics.
For me, “Can’t Live Without You” is a great song that highlights the contrast between a person who knows what she wants and who she is, and one who is struggling and moving in the opposite direction—ashamed to admit her feelings and unsure of her identity.
“Take A Break” has a calm, soft vibe that touches you deeply, only to lower your guard before you're hit with the track that gives the album its name: “Make That Sound.” This song deserves its position as it's the best saved for last—well-produced, captivating, and very catchy, with many layers of meaning.
“True Madness” makes it clear that this experience is coming to a close, leaving you wanting more. If you enjoyed the album, you will certainly be eager to see what this incredible duo has to offer in the future.
