Superfun Yeah Yeah Rockethship -- Honk It For Me Daddy

Alexander Taurozzi clutches his Canadian pearls in his review of Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship's album of queer trucker tunes Honk It For Me Daddy.

Superfun Yeah Yeah Rockethship -- Honk It For Me Daddy

When I got this assignment, I had no idea what to expect. The band: electro-rock and ‘lol funpocalypse’ Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship. The album: Honk It For Me Daddy: Truckin' Songs for Trucker Drivers and Truck Driving Enthsiasts and Also Everyone Else. The essential vibe: a truckin’ album for all truck drivers of the Nyan Cat! generation.

It is here, covered in rainbows and strange pop-tarts, that this album fits, belongs, loves, and thrives. ‘Music, comedy, fun, dumb’ - Superfun.

Superfun is the solo project of St. Louis, Missouri personality Superfun. His only
companion is a 9-foot tall horse named Cathy. Besides playing shows from east to west, opening for bands like The Aquabats and Koo Koo, we know little about this mystery disguised as a life-sized orange. Except, his father was a trucker – this is very important for later.

Honk It For Me Daddy is a comedy trucking album fusion. The CB Intermissions
scattered throughout to imitate an actual trucking transmission on the road made me honk the car horn. A madman with his horse got ahold of the radio. Recently, I drove from Toronto to Montreal and back, listening to Marvel's Wolverine: The Long Night, and these strange transmissions interrupted my broadcast several times, and thank god 'cus I was going to piss myself with fear without Superfun.

"Honk It" twangs and strings with "Booty-Scoot," and features sum gud Texan singing. Leaving your wife and your husband is very Marlon Brando-coded. "Truck Nuts" was covered by our own Rachel Cholst when it was released, and I enjoyed the track a few times.

"Booty Scoot" is the most George Orwell of the album. After a long truckin’ journey, Superfun finds a barn. Dancing / booty-scooting with animals ensues. My booty grooved, albeit the animals making noises make me want to have an aneurysm.

Now, I hate fun with a passion. The over the top stimulus is a lot for my senses, and I had to chicken out. No fault of Superfun, I’m Canadian and I just don’t have the constitution - I have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But enough of the colonial pissing contest. Yet, the connection to his father is clear; both these men truly know the roads and highways around America.

I also did not know this was a genre before starting. ‘Keep on Truckin’’ by Dave Dudley (1973), Truck Me Harder (The Waltons, 1989), Commander Cody ‘Hot Licks, Cold Steel, and Truckers Favorites’. You want em, you got em - add Superfun Yeah Yeah to the lexicon of the truckers tunes. It's a relatively shorter album that will get you through about 20 minutes of trucking before you have to pull over and change albums. A great novelty for the genre, never before
tackled.

A Nyan! out of 5 Superfun Points.
