Americana has been more or less defined as country and roots music’s island of misfit toys — including queer country artists. But in the past decade, as I wrote for The Boot, Americana the genre has become a commercial juggernaut, thanks in no small part to the Americana Music Association.

Born in West Texas, Julie Nolen has forged her own path without forgetting where she’s from. An Americana-roots rock-country troubadour, she is known for her energetic and passionate performances. She is also the founder and producer of the OUTlaw Pride Fest, the first queer country festival in Texas. The
